Common Misconceptions About Wearing Masks

Wearing a face mask or face covering in public is critical in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Even though wearing masks is now mandated by law in Singapore, it is also important to address some of the common myths and misconceptions that we may have about the wearing of masks.

MYTH: If I’m not sick, I don’t need a mask.

FACT: It has been reported by the more than 40% of virus transmissions happen before people feel sick. An asymptomatic person can spread the virus for up to 48 hours before symptoms arise.


MYTH: Wearing a cloth/reusable mask is useless.

FACT: Cloth masks can act as a physical barrier that keeps large droplets from being generated into the air and thus reduce the risk of someone else breathing them in.


MYTH: I don’t need to wear a mask if I practise social distancing.

FACT: There is mixed evidence about the ideal distance across countries. Therefore, the best protection only comes from both wearing a mask and safe social distancing in accordance to your health authorities’ guidelines.


MYTH: There’s no scientific evidence that support the wearing of masks.

FACT: An experiment using high-speed video found hundreds of droplets ranging from 20 to 500 micrometers created just from saying a simple phrase. However, nearly all of these droplets were blocked when the mouth was covered by a damp washcloth.

The strongest evidence has come from studies of real-world scenarios.

For instance, it was found in a study looking at 198 countries that those with cultural norms or government policies favouring the wearing of masks had lower death rates as a result of the coronavirus. Another recent study also found a slowdown in daily COVID-19 growth rates after mask mandates as compared to before, with a drop of 2% after just 3 weeks.

Case reports have also provided support for the wearing of masks. In one case, 2 hair stylists in Missouri who tested positive for COVID-19 were found to have had close contact with 140 clients. However, all 140 clients wore a mask and none of them were tested positive.


MYTH: Wearing a mask causes you to become sick, due to excessive intake of carbon dioxide.

FACT: While inhaling high levels of carbon dioxide is definitely dangerous, this is unlikely to happen from simply wearing a face mask.


MYTH: Wearing a mask will weaken my immune system.

FACT: There is no evidence that healthy adult-age individuals with no underlying immunodeficiencies need to have constant exposures to maintain their immune systems. Moreover, a mask does not prevent all microbes from entering our bodies that we are exposed to daily but does greatly reduce the spread of infectious aerosol droplets from entering our bodies when we are in close contact with those who are infected.


MYTH: Wearing a mask would reduce my oxygen intake and cause breathing difficulties.

FACT:  The feeling of being unable to breathe does not stem from the lack of oxygen intake when wearing masks. In support of this, a South Carolina doctor tested her own oxygen saturation rate (ie. Blood oxygen levels) with three types of masks that even included both the restrictive N95 respirator mask and a surgical mask. In the end, it was found that her oxygen saturation rate hovered at 98 to 99% in each test which indicated normal, healthy levels.


MYTH: There is no way a cloth/reusable can keep out such a small virus.

FACT: As the virus particles start to fester and multiply in a person’s body, they exit the cells and become suspended in the bodily fluids in our mouths, noses and lungs. Therefore, when the person coughs, they then spray showers of tiny droplets (also known as aerosols) that are filed with the virus into the air.
